SOUP & SHAKE!
Around 10% or £10 billion of the NHS budget a year is spent on diabetes, and the number of cases in the UK is now over 5 million. 90% of these cases are Type 2 diabetes, which is linked to obesity and usually diagnosed in middle age.
New results from a UK study have revealed that going on a strict soup and shake diet can permanently reverse Type 2 diabetes, showing that the benefits of weight loss continue in the long term.
This means that the complications of diabetes such as; heart disease, nerve damage, blindness, kidney failure and stroke can be avoided.
The DiREC Trial (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial) has found that patients with Type 2 diabetes can go into remission if they follow a rigorous weight-loss plan. This means blood sugar is under control and patients no longer need to take any medications such as metformin or insulin.
Patients were given two shakes and one soup a day, containing all the necessary nutrients at about 800 calories for between 12 and 20 weeks. They also received support from a nurse or dietitian to reintroduce healthy foods and maintain weight loss while medications for type 2 diabetes and blood pressure were stopped. The new trial data has shown 23% of people free from diabetes after two years of starting the diet were still in remission 3 years later, which is a medical milestone.
We know that obesity can lead to excess fat in the pancreas, which interferes with the mechanism for producing insulin and increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes.
The first results from DiRECT published in 2017, showed that 46% of those on the diet were in remission one year later, with 36% in remission after two years. The average weight loss while on the diet was 2 stone.
The NHS will now roll out the scheme nationwide over the next year, with patients being prescribed meal replacements of milkshakes and soups for 3 months, and then supported through a 12 month programme.
Another recent survey of 2,000 people in the UK, by Provytl Ltd, found that a ‘protein gap’ exists between what people aged over 50 should be consuming each day and what they actually eat.
Numerous studies show that age-related decline in muscle mass – also known as sarcopenia – can be avoided if we increase our daily protein intake, and that if a supplement is required, whey protein isolate is the most beneficial form of protein for older adults.
If you’re one of the 77 per cent of people in the UK who, according to the survey, are not eating the optimum amount of protein every day, daily sachets of Provytl 50+ containing 66 calories are easy to incorporate into your meals and drinks.
